Daphne Basset (née Bridgerton) is the fourth Bridgerton child and first daughter. She is also the younger twin sister of the Earl of Eastbourne, Colin Bridgerton, as well as mother to the next King of England, Augustus Basset and married to Simon Basset, the Grand Duke of Hastings.
History
Daphne is the fourth child born out of the union between the Viscount Edmund Bridgerton and Viscountess Violet Bridgerton. As the eldest daughter, she was responsible to prepare for the future of all of her sisters in the marriage mart, bringing a huge responsability to her.
Daphne's first season was in 1811, at eighteen. Her season was mostly secure, with the only conflict being her almost engagement to Prince Friedrich and later becoming the bride to Simon Basset before the King announced that her husband would be the next to assume the throne. Daphne carried an even bigger responsibility now to give birth to the heir, and after a year and a half of marriage, they welcomed Augustus Basset.
However, both of their health were in danger due to the passive poisoning of her makeup powder. It was only thanks to Penelope, a servant, that they got out alive of it. As a reward, Daphne granted Penelope the title of Dame of Court, and due to the new title, their friendship grew closer.
Personality
Daphne is considered the most level headed in the family apart from Francesca. She is also the one that takes more after her mother according to her siblings, even if she doesn't agree that much. Different from her younger sister, Eloise, Daphne has always been a fan of romance and love, and so she's been eager to begin in the marriage mart and meet her future husband.
Daphne can be quite overprotective, a trait she shares with her twin brother. And, in fact, she would say that she's the closest to him and thus the most protective over him. However, with her younger sisters she acts almost like a second mother, sometimes being too much and sometimes being just enough. Daphne likes that her sisters go to her for advice.
Relationships
ROMANTIC
Simon Basset — Grand Duke of Hastings
Daphne's husband and father of her son. He is best friends with her eldest brother, Anthony, and they met during her first ball of the season. Their proximity became a problem to Anthony, so Daphne got closer to him just to piss her brother off, and it developed into a romance while she was still in doubt of accepting Prince Friedrich's proposal or not.
Prince Friedrich — Prince of Prussia
Daphne's former suitor. They had a brief courtship during her first season out and before she began to develop feelings for Simon. He accepted the end of their union with grace, claiming to have no bad feelings about it. And Daphne is thankful for it.
Daphne's older twin brother. As the third and fourth born, they grew up attached at the hip, being each other's confidantes, even though they have clashing personalities mostly. Still, they were also the separator from the two eldest to the four youngers, becoming the bridge between the two groups most of the time. The family was really close overall, but there's just something more when you share a womb at the same time.
Anthony Bridgerton — Duke of Kent
Daphne's older brother. As the eldest, Daphne actually received his guidance during her first season out. However, when he thought it was a problem her close relationship with his best friend, she found it unfair and became even closer to Simon. Now that they are married, Anthony is far better in that regard, even if he still can be a stone to her shoes.
Violet Bridgerton — Dowager Viscountess
Daphne's mother. During her first season out, Daphne leaned over her mother to be guided in the marriage market until she found her husband. Violet is especially close to Daphne and her twin brother since they came after she miscarried, so they're her second-chance babies.
Eloise Bridgerton — Dame Eloise
Daphne's younger sister. Eloise is almost an antitheses of Daphne, yet they grew up as close as she was with Colin. However, when Daphne's attention became to the marriage mart, while Eloise's attention became to books and knowledge, they drifted apart. Of course they still love each other, and Daphne is extremely protective of Eloise, deciding to turn her into a Dame of Court in her debut season to see if the marriage mart becomes a little more agreeable to her.
Francesca Bridgerton — Miss Bridgerton
Daphne's youger sister. They specially bonded over piano and music. Francesca's love for the art is even bigger than hers, but Daphne was more often than not a guide to her sister's love when they were children and learning music.
Hyacinth Bridgerton — Miss Hyacinth
Daphne's yougest sister. As the baby of the family, Hyacinth is also a menace. Hyacinth is curious and interested in anything that can give her entertainment, and that includes her elder siblings and their fun-filled life because of High Society. Hyacinth is also very close to Daphne's husband, since he is good with children overall.
FRIENDSHIPS
Kate Sharma — Lady Kate
Daphne's head Dame of Court. Since they met, they became close and, as a request from Lady Mary and Violet, Daphne agreed to have Kate as one of her Dames even after her debut. She is, by far, the one person outside her family the Daphne trusts the most. Kate is also her closest friend.
Alice Mondrich — Duchess of Wellington
Daphne's Dame of Court. She is the wife of Simon's close friend, William Mondrich. They have been married for years and have two beautiful children. Daphne has met them during her courtship and engagement with Simon, and Alice was a mentor as she helped in guiding her on how to portray herself as a Duchess.
Penelope Whistledown — Dame Penelope
Daphne's employee and friend. The Grand Duchess was so thankful for her action in curing her son that she decided to not only give Penelope a promotion, but she also decided to stop her abducters from receiving any of her hardworking pences. Their gratefulness towards each other makes their trust in one another grow, so Penelope quickly became one of Daphne's most trustworthy Dame.
RIVALS
Cressida Cowper — Miss Cowper
Daphne's former rival. Even though Cressida debut way younger than the recommended age, she's never showed to be less dangerous. Cressida has always been ambitious, and so she wanted to be the next in line for the throne herself. However, Daphne was the one chosen by the Grand Duke, so her plans were dashed, much to her mother's dismay.
