Soma Anderson (m. Agatha Danbury) is Mayfair's Apothecary. She is the widow of Herman Danbury, and adoptive mother to Penelope Whistledown and Phillip Anderson.
History
Soma was born in the royal family of Sierra Leone. However, at only five, she was defined to be the future bride of Herman Danbury, a titled englishman. So she moved to England and, years later, met Her Majesty, the Queen. They formed a friendship and the Queen invited her to be her Dame of Court.
When the Queen found out about Soma's closeness to medicine plants and herbs, she decided to turn her into the Royal Physician and apothecary. However, after finding out that Soma was allegedly poisoning her on purpose, she expelled her from the Court and took off her title and fortune.
Soma went to Mayfair to meet an old friend, becoming an apothecary for her business. Since she couldn't keep a relationship with her real children anymore, she agreed to adopt and take care of Phillip, the lost child, however keeping a secret about his past. Then she adopted Penelope and led a pacific life, away from her past.
Until her daughter got abducted and everything had to change again.
Personality
Soma was raised to be poised and delicate, but not even her royal origins could change the way she was more curious than a woman is supposed to be. She grew up enjoying nature overall, but much closer to the herbs and medicinal plants that were loved by her mother.
During her marriage, she learned to be silent and obedient, but when her husband died, she learned to fly. Quietness was not something she liked, and it earned her some enemies and rivals even in high society. Now that she's out of it, she is much calmer and happy overall, choosing to be a mama bear to her adopted children, even if the old age doesn't allow her to be as bold as she used to be.
Relationships
ROMANTIC
Herman Danbury — Earl of Seaforth
Soma's arraged husband. He was a rich old man when she met him, and when he died he was still a rich old man. Soma's family thought that making her become titled in England would be better, so they sold her for the man. She was raised in Sierra Leone, but at eighteen, she got married to him. They spent around ten years married, had four children and he died when they were trying for a fifth that never saw the light of day.
Alexander Ledger — Baron Barkeley
After the death of her husband, Soma had an affair with Lord Ledger, a married lord with a little girl as a child. He was the only man she loved, but their affair didn't last long because he changed his mind about her.
Adolphus Basset — Duke of Hastings
The Queen introduced them, and although they did had a short courtship, Soma wasn't very interested. She ended up befriending his wife, Sarah, and became the godmother to their son, Simon.
When the Muse House was too full and after her son, Phillip, got closer to Penelope, Soma decided to adopt her to help her friend, Eunice, who had much to worry about. It was also around the same time that a shadow of the past showed up and tried to take the girls away, so separating both of them was the right decision. Penelope feels grateful for Soma, because it's thanks to her that she grew so fond of writing.
Phillip Anderson — Mayfair's Apothecary
Soma's adoptive son. She took him under her wing when he was just a baby, abandoned by his real family. Agatha noticed his curiosity and appreciation for plants and decided to raise him to be an apothecary as well, becoming a good team to this day.
Marcus Anderson — King of Sierra Leone
Soma's younger brother. They haven't seen or talked to each other in roughly twenty years, but they used to be close. Now, Marcus doesn't even know where his sister is, but he's been searching for her to bring her back home and assume the Crown as she ought to.
FRIENDSHIPS
Eunice Whistledown — Madam Eunice
Soma met Eunice when they were still in the Ton. She was a young mistress looking to escape before becoming the target of a law unfair for women, Soma was a prisoner in a marrage and they bonded over the hard difficulties women go through. Eunice became independent and Soma became powerful, becoming friends again after years apart.
RIVALS
Queen Charlotte — Queen of England
Once they were best friends, but when the Queen blamed Soma to be the cause for the death of all of her children, she decided to exhile her from the kingdom, removing her title and making Agatha Danbury a public enemy.
Araminta Cowper — Dame Araminta
Araminta was a former apprentice for Dame of Court, but she and Soma were never close. However, Araminta had tried and sabotaged her multiple times during her years being Dame of Court, finally succeeding in getting rid of her so she could take her place.
Vivian Ledger — Baroness Barkeley
Vivian had a hostle approach to Soma, and honestly anyone who had her skin tone, since the beginning. Their relationship became even more sour once she found out the affair her husband was having with Soma, even if she said she didn't mind too much. Soma is sure that Vivian gave Araminta a helping hand.
